The magic of Halloween is all about getting hands-on, sparking imagination, and making memories that last a bit longer than a bag of sweets. Here at Hooded Owls we believe in low-stress, high-fun activities that engage your little ones curious, developing minds.
You've probably just seen our top three sensory play ideas (like the gloriously gooey 'Guts & Eyeballs' spaghetti bin). Now, lets dig into even more easy Halloween fun using simple things you'll probably have around your home.
1. Sensory Pay for Little Monsters
Sensory activities are brilliant for preschoolers, helping them build fine motor skills through touch, sight and sound.
- Witches Brew Fizzing Cauldron: This is where play meets science! Fill a tub (e.g those little takeaway tubs or an old ice cream container) with baking soda and add a few drops of food colouring (green or purple works best). Give your little ones a small cup of vinegar to slowly pour over the top. Watch the fizzing, bubbling reaction! Why not add plastic spiders or eyeballs for extra spookiness
- Pumpkin Guts Exploration: When you carve your pumpkin over the next few days, don't throw away the insides! Put the pulp, seeds and slime into a container or bowl and let your child explore. They can use a small spoon to scoop, their fingers to squish and swirl, and practice their pincer grip by pulling out the seeds. What more do you need for the ultimate messy play!
2. Low-mess, High-Impact Halloween Crafts
Want to create some easy, seasonal decorations that will keep your little ones entertained and spark imagination and play? These craft ideas are perfect for little hands with minimal clear-up.
- Toilet Roll Characters: Don't throw out the cardboard tubes. Wrap then in either white toilet paper, tissue paper or just white paper to create little mummies (use a black marker for eyes or a couple of dabs of black paint) Or paint them black for bats! Cut out some wings from card, paint or colour them in and stick them on the back of the tube. You could even make some little bat ears too!
- Handprint Ghosts and bats: Dip their hands (and yours!) into black paint for a spooky bat print, or use white paint or black card for an adorable footprint ghost. Once dry add details with coloured markers or googly eyes to bring them to life. These make wonderful keepsakes.
- Paper plate spiders: Paint paper plates black and let your child stick on eight pre-cut black strips of card for the legs and a pair of googly eyes. They're fun and perfect to hang up with some string through a punched out hole in the top of the plate.
3. Simple Spooky Snacks to Bake Together
Get your little ones involved in the kitchen with some easy-to-bake Halloween themed treats.
- Spider Biscuits: Use a simple recipe to make a batch of round biscuits or cookies. Once nearly cooled, press a large chocolate button or similar (Maltesers or Rolo's work great too) in the centre for the body. Use melted dark chocolate to pipe eight legs around the body and finish with a a couple of white chocolate chips for eyes, and a dot of dark chocolate for the pupils.
- Mummy Hot Dogs: Wrap strips of 'Ready to Roll' shortcrust pastry around a hot dog, leaving a small gap for the face. Bake until golden. Then use mustard or ketchup to add eyes - the perfect fun Halloween party snack!
- Mixed Spice Skeleton Biscuits: Use a Gingerbread Man cuter to create spiced or Gingerbread biscuits. Mix some white icing and pipe a skeleton.
- Ghostly Ice Cream Sundaes: Buy ready made mix or make meringue and create small meringue ghosts by piping ghost shapes, approx 5cm in diameter. By pulling the bag away as you finish piping each one, you’ll create a thin, wispy peak on top. Once your meringues are baked and cooled, scoop three ice cream balls into a slim glass, add the meringue on the top and drizzle red coulis or strawberry sauce over top for blood. Add a couple of white chocolate chips for eyes and eat immediately!
